Local 308’s office gets Network System A team of computer experts transported Local 308 into the 21st century starting this week by establishing a local area network in our union headquarters. The office will operate more efficiently and effectively than ever before by connecting all of our office’s computers to a network system. For example, the Local is going to be able to eliminate two of its three fax lines. That’s because the network enables us to send documents to a fax machine without having to print it first. We’ve kept one fax line for those times when we have to fax material that’s not on our PC’s, such as something that we receive via regular mail. Another benefit of having a network is that Local 308 can better organize its files. Currently, we have many paper files. The network allows us to utilize a high-speed scanner to turn those paper files into electronic ones. The electronic files are very and inexpensive to store. And it is much easier to locate and retrieve electronic files than it is paper ones. The main reason for setting up the network was to enable Treasurer Tony Branco and Office Manager Barbara Kane to input financial data into Quickbooks, a general ledger program. You’ll recall the Local is in the process of automating its financial records with the help of our new Accounting Firm Bond Beebe. In fact, the record keeping of the previous administration was so bad that it was impossible to perform an audit. That’s all about to change with your new administration. For now, we only will have a network at our local headquarters. In the future, we’ll network all our branches so that it’s easier to share documents and information. We’ll keep you posted on how the network is coming along and making us more productive. Members, remember Jan. and Feb. is our membership drive so let’s all do our best to get more members signed up to our Local. Fraternally, John Macey
